ABOUT THE AUTHOR
When he was younger, Minnesotan Schon M. Zwakman considered a career in creative arts. At twelve, he even attempted to write a novel, but was disappointed with the result, destroyed the only draft, and quickly abandoned his creative aspirations. Instead, Schon’s inclinations steered him toward a more practical, if not more distinguished, pursuit—an engineering degree from the United States Naval Academy and tours of the world as a naval officer. To pass the time, Schon never stopped reading, acquainting himself with a wide variety of topics and genres. Yet Schon’s first love was always science fiction and fantasy stories.
After suffering through numerous pitches for possible scripts and stories, Schon’s family encouraged him to try writing again: there was even mention of simply locking him in a room until he finished a novel. He’s been writing ever since.
A Writers of the Future semifinalist in 2006, Schon’s winning story is his eighth submission to the Contest. A self-described free agent, he currently resides in Cottage Grove, Minnesota.
ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR
Tobias A. Fruge (“Toby”) was born in a small Arizona mining town. He started drawing as a child when his mother handed him pencils and paper to pacify him in church while his father preached. After the parents moved 150 miles due east to teach in Payson, Toby would spend hours after school in the high-school library where his mom worked. There he’d sit looking at countless book covers with their animated figures locked in life-and-death struggles.
But it wasn’t until Toby’s own struggles brought him to prison that he became serious about drawing: It was the only activity that freed him from the oppressive walls. He began with Christmas cards in colored pencil for family members. As his skills grew, Toby wanted to paint what he loved most to read about—scenes from science fiction, fantasy and wildlife. Without paints or brushes, Toby turned to black and white illustration, using ballpoint pens to exquisitely craft his worlds.
He currently attends junior college in Mesa and expects to graduate soon with an Associate Arts degree. When not studying or drawing, Toby enjoys weight lifting, his bulldog Pete and Cajun music.
